Team for Kids, Head Coach

The Head Coach for Team for Kids ( will create a top quality training experience for runners of all abilities for our Team for Kids program, an international community of approximately 6,000 adult runners annually who compete in a variety of 11 premier running events and raise funds in support of NYRR’s youth programs.
The Coach will organize and execute comprehensive, three-tiered training programs for beginner, intermediate, and experienced runners per event. S/he will provide inspirational and effective leadership that will ensure a safe and positive environment for local and out-of-town Team members. As part of the training program, the Coach will plan, execute, and staff three workouts per week during Marathon training season (May to November), one weekend long run during the United Airlines NYC and Airbnb Brooklyn Half training cycle (January to May). With assistance from Team for Kids staff, the Coach will supervise a team of approximately 12 part-time coaches to assist with training members (in-person and via phone/email) and executing the training plan.

  • Ability to liaison with full-time Team for Kids office staff from the field on a regular basis
  • In partnership with Team for Kids office staff, hire, recruit, train, and supervise coaching staff
  • Develop general overall training schedule and articulate specific training schedules for participants at every level for 11 races annually, accommodating varying timelines
  • Plan and execute all training runs, with assistance from Team for Kids staff and coaches. This includes establishing a coaching staff schedule for runs, choosing routes, securing permits or permission as necessary, accounting for route marshals or signage, providing accurate course maps to Team members as necessary, establishing water stops as appropriate, developing emergency plans, managing any conflict or issues, and assuring the well-being of all team members at each session.
  • Attend the large majority of training runs and ensure that all attendees finish safely. The Head Coach (when in attendance) is the first to arrive and the last to leave at each practice
  • Develop the flow for each practice to maintain and ensure consistency. This includes announcements, warm up jog, and pre- and post-run stretching and strengthening routines
  • Supervise and provide responses to training-related questions in person, via email and phone (capable of handling high volume)
  • Assist Team for Kids staff and coaches in organizing training and fitness clinics
  • Attend Team for Kids recruitment events as appropriate and assist with recruitment through contacts in the health/fitness sectors
  • Attend the respective endurance events to support Team members. Note: the Head Coach will attend TFK events in a supporting role and will not be permitted to race him/herself



Skills and Attributes:

  • Exceptional leadership abilities and communications skills with a proven ability to motivate and inspire participants and staff are a must
  • Candidates should be organized team players with a personable manner, sense of humor, excellent customer service and problem-solving skills, and should have the ability to work with a diverse group of staff and participants
  • S/he should be able to work with, support, and understand athletes of all ability levels and should be skilled at consensus-building
  • Candidates must be equally strong at administrative and logistics planning as they are at coaching and inspiring. Management experience required
  • Applicant must possess expert teaching ability and knowledge of racing technique


  • Previous large group coaching experience, including staff supervision, and extensive knowledge of marathon and long distance running a must
  • Coaching certification (either USATF or RRCA) is required
  • Candidates must be CPR and First-Aid certified
  • Experience with a charity team is highly desirable

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be available most Saturdays throughout the year (approximately 35), and Monday and Wednesday evenings through the summer
